Usually cementum aging is associated to accurately judging the age of deers (and related animals). There are actually two ways to find out the age of the deer, one is by carefully judging the wear and tear of the teeth of the deer (or similar animal) and calculating the age according to these signs, as well as the shape and number of teeth in the mouth of the deer.
It has been found however, that this method is highly inaccurate when you want to pin down the age more correctly. Hence, whenever the right age of the animal is required, the cementum aging method is used. Though this method is very expensive and requires sophisticated laboratory equipment and expertise, the results are highly precise. Hence, whenever the answer is important, the age is determined by the cementum method.
What Does the Cementum Method Involve?
Usually this method is applied to the front incisors, though it can be done to any other teeth as well. The teeth are gently removed very carefully not to damage any tissue and are sent to the lab. Here, the teeth are cleaned and then placed in a light acid solution to get de-calcified. Once it is de-calcified, the teeth become like pencil erasers. These are frozen first and then sliced in micro sizes for viewing under the microscope.
Once this is done, a little dye is added to enhance viewing, and then the lab technician counts the rings that are formed. Each ring formed symbolizes one year passed. Hence, if there are three rings, the deer is three years old; if it has not one proper ring formed, then it has not yet completed one year, and so on.
There is not enough information to tie up anti aging to cementum aging in any form yet, though there are a lot of speculations. However, there are plenty of research studies which are looking into the aspect of anti aging to cementum aging and hopefully some of these studies would come up with better choices and understanding of both anti aging and cementum aging concepts. Only then a proper link can be established. The anti aging to cementum aging tie-up concept is new and it will require quite some work before some proper material is found for it. There are a lot of funds going into research on anti aging to cementum aging and the results will come out in the course of the next five years. Hopefully, some breakthrough will be seen soon.
