Just feed your kids coffee!  by Toni Franchez, webmaster at http://www.StylishCoffees.com  Chocolate Covered Coffee Beans are Fun to Make and Eat  Perhaps you've seen some of those shows which are designed to entertain the kids during the spring break?   They invite you to make outlandish objects from unlikely materials, and to 'cook' delicious cookies - which usually turn out to be something like Rice Krispies or Corn Flakes, covered in melted cooking chocolate. Well, here's a new wrinkle on that old idea  -  why not make some chocolate covered coffee beans? It's not as daft as it sounds.  Most kids have a sweet tooth, and many also like the taste and smell of a fresh cup of coffee.  Though the tastes of chocolate and of coffee are very different, they make a great match, since the sugary sweetness of the candy helps to offset the slight bitterness of the more acidic coffee bean.   Chocolate and coffee can work very well together, especially if you choose rich smooth Belgian chocolate.  In good restaurants in Europe very often a complimentary chocolate candy will be served with coffee, particularly dark chocolate sweets.  An equally sophisticated choice is the great taste of chocolate covered coffee beans.  If you’re a coffee lover, a chocolate lover, or both, chocolate covered coffee beans make a great snack. This bittersweet, crunchy snack gives you the soothing, mellow flavor of one of the world's favourite candies combined with the tang and aroma of coffee.   And even better, this is a snack which will do you good, since you’ll get a little caffeine pep-up from eating the coffee beans and a little endorphin rush from the chocolate.  And did you know that chocolate is a great source of iron?   Look after your Health while looking after your kids! Busy moms often have iron levels slightly below optimum, which causes irritability. The iron and energy boost which comes from eating chocolate and coffee together is sure to make you smile at your kids more often. Some people are serious enough about getting the right coffee that they take the trouble to buy their own beans and grind them at home.  Even if you’re serious about your coffee, you can still get light-hearted about your chocolatey coffee beans. They're fun!  Laughter really is the best medicine. A bonus when buying your own fixings, is that you’re sure to get a combination of tastes which you'll absolutely love.    How to Make this Treat Making this great snack is as easy as 1, 2, 3.   Although dark chocolate is the choice most families opt for, any kind of chocolate can make great chocolatey coffee beans, even white chocolate.    1.   You'll need to melt the chocolate  -   A container steaming gently over a pot of boiling water is the purist's choice.  But a few seconds in the microwave works just as well, and is a lot safer if the kids are helping you to cook!   2.   Dip the beans into the melted chocolate   Either cover them completely and then fish them out with a fork or strainer; or pour the choc melt over the beans and then pour off the excess.   Kids love the latter method  -  it's messier, the beans don't turn out quite so perfect (which is an adventure) and they get to eat the 'waste' and to cover themselves in melted chocolate during the process!  Oh, the joys of stay at home motherhood!   3.   Set the chocolate covered beans on wax paper to harden overnight, and you’ll have a scrumptious, filling, treat that you made from scratch.  Choosing Your Fixings The selection of the right beans is very important.  You'll want to buy a medium or dark roast.  A light roast will be too acidic for chocolate covered coffee beans to work out well.  That's one reason why chocolate covered espresso beans are a popular choice, since espresso is a very dark roast.   You can bring out interesting flavor combinations by trying out the various flavored beans.  Usually considered inferior by aficionados for creating a perfect cup of coffee, beans flavoured with vanilla add an extra dimension to chocolatey coffee bean feasts.  And vanilla is another Natural Health Helper for the busy mom. Give this sweet, crunchy, snack a try and you’re sure to get hooked!  And with luck, the kids will be hooked too, and spend enough time during their spring break making and snacking on chocolate covered coffee beans, to enable you to put your feet up with a nice soothing cup of your favourite java blend.
