Why our Prison System needs Changes

Currently it costs about $20,000 USD on average a year for each prisoner.  This cost comes from food, health care, costs of guards, buildings, etc.  Plus with the current cost of more than $1 Million in order to go for the death penalty, there really are some changes to be made. 

       First, for small crimes which involve petty theft and others, why can’t we have instant punishment?  For example: A thief who breaks into a jewelry store at night and steals some jewelry and is caught without anyone getting hurt.  Why not give instant punishment and send him home?  Let’s make him/her an offer, break a finger or two immediately if he confesses (then set it immediately) and a whole hand if it goes to court. Sometimes a thief may not think clearly and by putting him/her in prison for any length of time may hurt the entire family instead of just the thief.  The breaking of bones could be done at the prison and then set by the prison doctor.  This should be televised so criminals will see what pain awaits them and that the breaking of the bones is done as humanly as possible.  I believe that criminals, especially their family’s, would prefer this over jail time as they get to stay together and the punishment is done immediately.  Also, it is harder for a criminal to steal with broken fingers.  Plus they will be REMINDED of the crime for a longer period of time.

       Second, for the rapist, there should be instant punishment for him as well.  His punishment should be two-fold.  One is long deep cuts in his penis with salt or other material that will burn a long time.  The second, place a medical device in his penis that will prevent him from getting an erection with the DIRE warning, do not remove the device for a certain length of time.  If he should remove the device and rape again then he should have half of his penis chopped off.  If rape again then chop off the rest except a stub for urination!  We should keep his testicles in tact because then he will still have the desire for sex, but then the torture is that he can’t do it!  I believe that by threatening the very thing that a rapist loves most we would cut down on the number of rapes DRAMATICALLY.  While yes, I believe that we can put them back into the mainstream of life, the threat of losing their penis would do more than any length of jail time.  As men in prison for a long time will have a strong desire for sex when they get out.  So, I do not believe that having prison terms for rapists is a good deterrent. 

       Third, for the murderer, there should be long time punishment.  Let us consider you are in a bank and a bank robber comes in and shoots the guard.  Let’s assume that the state you are in does not have the death penalty or that he would get the death penalty for shooting the guard.  In this case the robber/murderer has NOTHING to lose by killing you or anyone else.  With the current justice system, this is appalling.   Nothing is available to protect my life.  So, what can we do to prevent any criminal from thinking “what do I have to lose?”.  We need constant punishment, like torture.  Yes, I know America does not like torture, but we really need it.  Let’s say that someone who has reached maximum penalty and continues to break the law would get something done every week – like a finger/toe broken or 10 lashes or toenail pulled or something that would discourage criminals from doing something VERY bad.  Plus these “torture” settings need to be televised so that “potential” criminals would be discouraged about following their plans.

       While I love America, their justice system just does not protect the American citizen enough.  While most people would agree that torture is not good, I believe that there are ways that we can use torture humanely in order to protect the American citizen more and deter future criminals.  We can also keep criminals home more with instant punishment to help prevent other family members from having to think about turning to a life of crime without the family provider at home.  I hope America will think about its current punishment system and agree that something needs to change.
